PATWA was established during the PATA Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The aim of PATWA is to promote professional development of travel writing and travel communication which makes invaluable contribution in the promotion of tourism. PATWA will support the fundamental objectives of PATA efforts for tourism and at the same time it will maintain adherence to the fundamental principles of the UNESCO, United Nations and of the World Tourism Organisation. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The members of the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA), adhere to the Fundamental Principles of the United Nations, UNESCO and the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

INSPIRED BY

- The wish to get acquainted with all human beings, to get to know countries and people, their habits, customs, history and civilization.
- The aspiration that commands people to live in good benevolence, co-operation and peace.
- The evolution of social living standards and the ceaseless development and process of communication to an extent when tourism becomes an essential need for the people.

CONSIDERING THAT

- Tourism, is a vivid force in service of world peace that may assure the moral and intellectual basis for understanding and interdependence between the nations.
- Tourism may develop in a peaceful climate of security, the realisation of which depends upon the efforts deployed and the concern of all States in the intention to favour the diminition of international tension and to develop international co-operation in a friendly spirit in respect of man’s rights and of mutual understanding.
- The undeniable beneficial effects of tourism on the national economies and the world trades can in no case make up the only objective of tourism policy.
- UNITING THEIR EFFORTS in order to contribute with pen word and audio visual means.
- To the widest expansion of tourism in the world, a powerful factor for reconciliation between people.
- To defend the right of all people for vacation and tourism.
- To the conservation and valorisation of human, natural, cultural and historical resources, added to the ecological concern being one reason of tourism, contributing in this aspect to the quality of life that, is the balance and harmony of the environment.
- To spread the knowledge about different nations and countries as well as about their history, habits, traditions and culture.
- To the development of new forms of tourism, to promote destinations, and to give access to holidays for more and more social levels of the population.
- TO REACH THESE AIMS, the members of PATWA are engaged in circulating information about national and international tourism keeping in view the threefold aim of objectivity, realism and serenity to be able to inform, orientate and educate the reader or listener.
- To stimulate the development of national and international tourism, by their creative activity. To encourage the co-operation between the tourist organs in the world, the international exchange of experiences.
- To be careful not to discredit the profession by their behaviour or writing.
- CONVINCED that their mission forms a powerful factor to the indispensable understanding between the people, the members of the PATWA, show solidarity in respect of their Charter, the principles of which will contribute to forging a just and lasting peace in the world.
